Milestone XProtect: open-platform VMS

Milestone Installer Perth

Milestone installer Perth for organisations running, or moving to, XProtect video management. We design the recording servers, integrate cameras from any manufacturer, manage device licences, configure the Smart Client and mobile apps, and support the system afterwards, including taking over XProtect sites installed by other contractors.

Where Milestone XProtect is the right platform

Milestone XProtect is the open-platform VMS found behind larger Perth camera systems: councils and government buildings, universities and schools, hospitals and aged care, logistics hubs, mining offices and multi-building strata. It is chosen when the camera count is in the dozens to the thousands, the cameras come from more than one maker, and the system has to integrate with access control, intercoms, plate recognition or analytics from third parties.

  • Mixed-brand estates: Axis, Hanwha, Hikvision, Dahua, i-PRO, Bosch and others on one timeline.
  • Multi-site: several recording servers managed centrally, with site-level permissions for local staff.
  • Integrations: access control events, alarm panels, intercoms and analytics plugged into the same operator view.

Server design, licensing and installation

XProtect performance depends on the recording server design: CPU and GPU for the video streams, storage sized for resolution and retention, archiving where long retention is required, and a network that keeps camera traffic separate from the office. We specify this from the camera schedule rather than a generic bundle, and we tell you when an existing server or virtual environment can be reused.

Milestone is licensed per device and by edition, with a care plan that keeps the software current. We handle the edition choice, the device licences and the care plan as part of the quote, and register everything in your organisation's name so the licences stay yours if the installer ever changes.

Taking over an existing Milestone system

Many XProtect sites in Perth were installed years ago and have had no one looking after them since. A takeover starts with an audit: which edition and version is running, whether the care plan has lapsed, which cameras have stopped recording, how much storage is actually left, and who holds the administrator credentials. From there we bring the software current, fix the recording gaps, document the system and put it on a maintenance agreement so it stays that way.

Milestone compared with the alternatives

For a single site with one camera brand, XProtect is more than you need; UniFi Protect or a branded recorder does the job for less. For mixed-brand systems where the budget matters more than deep integrations, Nx Witness is lighter and simpler to license. Where video, access control and plate recognition must live in one unified product from one vendor, Genetec Security Center is the direct comparison. We install all four and recommend by the site, not the brand.

Questions we get asked

Which cameras work with Milestone XProtect?

XProtect supports cameras from essentially every major manufacturer through native drivers and ONVIF. Before quoting we check each existing model against the Milestone supported device list and flag anything that would need replacing or would lose features.

How is Milestone licensed?

Per connected device, plus a base licence for the edition you run, with an optional care plan for updates and support. We include the licences and care plan in the installation quote so the full cost is visible, and register them to your organisation.

Can you take over a Milestone system installed by another company?

Yes. We audit the server, edition, licences, cameras and credentials, bring the software up to date, repair what is not recording and document the system. If licences or credentials are tied to the previous installer we work through the transfer with Milestone.

Does Milestone need a dedicated server?

For anything beyond a small system, yes, or a properly resourced virtual machine. We size it from the camera count, resolution, frame rate and retention you need, and plan for growth so adding cameras later does not mean replacing the server.

Can Milestone integrate with our access control?

Yes. XProtect integrates with major access control platforms, including Gallagher and Inner Range systems we install, so door events, alarms and video appear together for the operator. We configure the integration as part of the installation.

Send us the camera schedule

Camera count and brands, number of sites, retention requirement, and what the system needs to integrate with. If it is an existing XProtect site, the edition and version from the Management Client helps. We will design the servers and quote the licences and installation together.
