Security Cameras Without Subscription: What We Install in Perth Homes Instead of a Monthly Plan
Security cameras without subscription are the most common thing Perth homeowners ask us for, and it is nearly always said the same way: "I've got a Ring doorbell and a couple of Wi-Fi cameras and I'm sick of paying every month to see my own footage." Here is the part the camera companies would rather you did not know. The systems a licensed installer fits in a house have never had a subscription. The recorder is yours, the app is included, and nobody can move your video history behind a paywall.
This guide covers the cameras, video doorbells and alarms we install in Perth homes that carry no licence or monthly fee from the manufacturer, which ongoing costs are genuinely optional, and, because you deserve the honest version, what you give up by paying nothing at all.
Done with the monthly plan? Tell us what is on the house now and we will quote a system you own outright.
Why the Ring doorbell people end up calling us
The retail camera model works like this. The doorbell or camera is cheap, the app is slick, and the first time something actually happens, a car scraped in the driveway, a parcel gone, someone trying the side gate at 3am, you open the app to look back and discover that video history is on the plan. So you pay. Then the plan goes up. Then a feature you were using moves to a higher tier. Then they announce that something that used to be included now is not. You did not buy a camera. You bought a monthly bill with a camera attached, and the footage of your own front door is on a server in another country that you are renting access to.
Add a second camera, a third, a doorbell at the back for the granny flat, and the "small" monthly plan is a real number across a year. Stop paying and you are back to a live view with no memory, which is to say a camera that cannot tell you what happened.
The one question that settles it
Where does the footage live? If it is recorded onto a box in your house that you own, there is nothing to subscribe to. If the only copy is on the manufacturer's servers, you are renting your own footage. Every system below passes that test.
Home CCTV systems with no subscription that we install in Perth
These are the camera platforms we fit in Perth homes. For each one the question is the same: does the manufacturer charge anything ongoing for the cameras, the recorder or the app? The answer, for all of them, is no.
| Platform | Where footage lives | Manufacturer fee | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| UniFi Protect | A UniFi recorder in the house | None | Homes that want cameras, a video doorbell and the home Wi-Fi in one app with no plan on any of it |
| Hikvision | Hikvision NVR in the house | None | Four to eight cameras around a house, sharp night images, remote view in Hik-Connect |
| Dahua | Dahua NVR in the house | None | Full-colour night vision and cameras with a built-in light and siren for driveways and side paths; remote view in DMSS |
| Ajax cameras | Ajax NVR in the house | None for cameras, NVR or app | Homes that want the alarm and the cameras in the same app; an off-site copy of event clips is an optional per-camera plan, never required |
On every one of them you open the app from anywhere, watch live, scroll back through weeks of recordings, save a clip for the police or the insurer and get a notification when a person walks up the driveway at 2am. None of that is a paid tier. It is simply what the recorder does.
How long the footage is kept is decided by the hard drive we fit, not by a plan. Thirty days of continuous recording across every camera is normal on a home system, which is a different world from a cloud plan's short clips. See how long CCTV footage is kept in Australia for how we size it.
Video doorbells without a plan
The doorbell is where most people first met a subscription, so it is worth its own answer. A doorbell that records to the recorder in your house behaves exactly like the other cameras: the visitor, the courier, the person who took the parcel, all kept for weeks and viewable from your phone with no plan. The UniFi doorbell does this and sits in the same app as the UniFi cameras, with a second camera looking down at the step for packages. For a gate or a front door that needs to open as well as see, a wired video intercom from Dahua or Hikvision records to the same recorder and unlocks the gate from the app.
Either way the doorbell is wired and powered, so it does not drop off the Wi-Fi or need its battery charged, and it is fitted properly rather than stuck to the brickwork.
Home alarm systems with no monthly fee
Alarms get the same question, and the answer has two halves. The alarm itself, the detectors, sirens, keypad and the app that tells you it has gone off, needs no subscription on the systems we install. What has historically cost money each month is monitoring: a control room that receives the alarm and does something about it. That is a service, it is optional, and whether you want it is a separate decision from which alarm you buy.
- → Ajax. Arms and disarms from your phone or the keypad, chimes when a door opens, sounds the sirens and sends a push notification with a photo from its MotionCam detectors, all with no plan. Add professional monitoring if you want a control room behind it while you are overseas; leave it off if you do not. This is the alarm we fit most for people who have been burnt by subscriptions.
- → Bosch and DSC panels. The panel in the cupboard with wired detectors that half of Perth's houses already have. It protects the house with no ongoing cost at all, which is why a 15-year-old Bosch Solution panel is still worth keeping and repairing. App control depends on which communicator is fitted, and a 4G path has a SIM cost, so we tell you that before anything goes in.
- → Alarm.com-based systems. Subscription by design: the app, automation and monitoring come as a service. We install it where someone wants that full managed package, and we say plainly that it is a subscription product so nobody is surprised later.
What legitimately costs money each month, and when it is worth it
"No subscription" should not become a religion. There are three ongoing costs we think are worth paying in the right situation. The difference is that each one is a choice you make with the cost in front of you, not a condition of the camera working.
Professional monitoring
A control room that receives the alarm and calls you, a patrol or the police. Worth it if you travel a lot, have an elderly parent at home, or simply do not want to be the person woken at 3am to decide what to do. See alarm monitoring in Perth.
A 4G backup path
A SIM in the alarm so an alert still gets out when the NBN is down or the modem is switched off at the wall. The SIM has a plan; the equipment does not. Cheap insurance in a house where the internet is the first thing a burglar unplugs.
An off-site copy of key clips
If the recorder itself is stolen in a break-in the footage goes with it. Cloud storage on the one or two cameras that cover the entry is the sensible version of this, not every camera on a plan.
What you give up with zero ongoing costs
Honesty cuts both ways, so here is the other side. A home system with no subscriptions and no monitoring means:
- →Nobody responds but you. The app will tell you the side gate opened at 2:14am. What happens next is up to whoever is holding the phone.
- →The footage is in one place. A recorder sitting in plain view by the back door is a recorder that leaves with the burglar. We mount them out of the obvious path, but a copy off site is the only real answer to that risk.
- →Internet down means remote view down. Recording continues inside the house, which is the advantage of local storage, but you will not see it from your phone until the connection is back.
For most Perth homes those trade-offs are completely acceptable, and for others one paid layer, usually monitoring, closes the gap. The system underneath is the same either way, which is the point: start with equipment you own, then add a service only where it earns its keep.
How we do it at your place
Our default for a Perth home is a locally recorded camera system and a self-notifying alarm: UniFi, Hikvision, Dahua or Ajax depending on the house, with no plan attached to any of it. If there is an ongoing cost at all, monitoring, a SIM, cloud backup on a camera or two, it appears on the quote as its own line with the amount next to it before you agree to anything. If you do not want it, it comes off, and the cameras and alarm keep working exactly the same.
If you are paying a plan for a Ring-style doorbell and Wi-Fi cameras right now, tell us what is on the house. The wired cameras go where the Wi-Fi ones were struggling, the recorder goes in a cupboard, the doorbell records with everything else, and the monthly bill stops.
