Stentofon Turbine Perth: Noise Cancelling Intercoms for Mining & Industrial WA
Standard intercoms fail at vehicle gates, weighbridges and loading docks. The Stentofon Turbine actively cancels diesel engine noise — so loud sites can actually communicate.
There's a particular problem at WA mining sites, recycling yards, distribution centres, and anywhere trucks idle near a gate or weighbridge: the intercom doesn't work. Not because it's broken — because the ambient noise floor is 85-90dB and the intercom was designed for a quiet office door. Someone presses the button, the operator in the control room hears a wall of engine noise, maybe catches a word or two, and the whole interaction breaks down. Stentofon built the Turbine to solve exactly this problem. It's what we supply and install through our partnership with SCA.
The Stentofon Turbine at a glance
- Active noise cancellation: Locks on to the frequency and repetition of diesel engine noise and removes it from the audio stream
- AVC (Automatic Volume Control): Output is always a defined number of dB louder than ambient noise — automatically adjusts in real time
- Output: 95-105dB — genuinely audible over running engines
- IP-66 rated: Fully weatherproof for outdoor industrial use
- Serverless operation: Can run without a central server — important for remote sites
- ONVIF Profile-S compliant: Video versions dual-stream directly into your VMS
Who Needs Noise Cancelling Intercoms in WA?
Western Australia has more loud sites per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in Australia. The mining industry alone generates enormous demand for communications equipment that actually works in high-noise environments. But mining isn't the only sector where standard intercoms fail.
Mining Sites & Remote Operations
Vehicle gates, haul road entry points, processing plant access, and site office entry all require clear two-way communication when trucks and heavy equipment are running nearby. A standard IP intercom at a mine gate is essentially unusable. The Stentofon Turbine is designed specifically for this environment — it's the intercom that mines actually install rather than just tolerate.
Weighbridges & Distribution Centres
Weighbridge operators communicate with truck drivers all day. The entire transaction — tare weight, load confirmation, docket collection — happens over an intercom while a diesel engine idles three metres away. A noise-cancelling intercom isn't a luxury here; it's the difference between a functional weighbridge and constant miscommunication causing delays and errors.
Recycling Yards & Waste Facilities
Tip entry points, recycling centre gates, and transfer station access points operate in exactly this environment — continuous vehicle noise, outdoor exposure, and a need for reliable two-way communication at the entry point. SCA has deployed noise cancelling intercoms at major newspaper printing facilities where conveyor belt and engine noise makes standard intercoms useless.
Loading Docks
Commercial loading docks — warehouses, cold storage, food distribution — have the same problem. Delivery drivers need to communicate through an intercom while a refrigeration unit or truck engine runs nearby. Standard units pick up everything except the conversation.
Ports & Marine Facilities
Fremantle Port and WA's regional ports have communication requirements at gates, quayside access points, and vessel berths that standard intercoms cannot reliably serve. Wind, engine noise, and distance all compound the problem that Stentofon intercoms are engineered to handle.
How Stentofon Noise Cancellation Works
Most "noise cancelling" claims on intercoms are marketing — a slightly higher output level dressed up as noise cancellation. Stentofon's approach is genuinely different.
The Turbine's system identifies the frequency signature and repetition pattern of diesel and petrol engines — the combustion cycle creates a highly consistent, predictable noise profile. The system locks on to that profile and actively subtracts it from the audio stream before it reaches the far end. This isn't passive (louder speaker), it's active (remove the noise before it's transmitted).
On top of this, the AVC (Automatic Volume Control) continuously samples the ambient noise level and adjusts the Turbine's output so it remains at a defined loudness advantage over the environment. In a live demonstration in a tunnel in Portugal, you can watch the system adapt in real time as noise levels fluctuate — the conversation remains clear and audible throughout. The same behaviour applies at a WA mine gate when a haul truck idles up to the intercom station.
Why Perth & WA Industrial Sites Choose Stentofon
We've been contacted by facilities managers who've tried standard commercial intercoms at their site gates and been disappointed — not because the intercom was low-quality, but because no standard intercom is designed for 90dB ambient noise. The Stentofon Turbine is the answer to that problem.
Beyond the noise cancellation, the technical specifications matter for WA's industrial environment:
- IP-66 weatherproof — handles the dust and heat of WA conditions
- Serverless operation — remote sites without reliable server infrastructure can still run the system
- VMS integration — video versions feed directly into your surveillance system via ONVIF Profile-S, so the gate camera and intercom are in the same platform
- SIP compatible — connects to existing SIP phone infrastructure at larger sites
As an authorised SCA partner, we supply and install Stentofon intercoms in Perth and across WA. If you're managing a site where your current intercom solution is failing because of noise, get in touch — we can assess your site and specify the right Turbine configuration for your environment.
